Voronezh was the cradle of the family since 1783. This particular year, Catherine the Great named Vassili Alekseyevich Tchertkoff (1726-1793), Governor General of the Voronezh Province. Still shaken by the Pugachev’s revolt, the Russian Empress named him as well, commander of the army in the Southern Region of Russia.
