GET INVOLVED – ADOPT A BOOK!

The Tchertkoff Memorial and Cultural Foundation is launching a worldwide appeal to people and organizations of good will, willing to support its restoration projects in Russia and save from TOTAL destruction the First Public Library of Moscow – ROSSIKA.

In this unique library of 50,000 rare books written in the 1800s, in many languages of Europe, is the history of Russia. This library was used by the elite of Russian literature in the 19thcentury such as Pushkin,Gogol and Chekhov. Tolstoy used it while writing War and Peace.

BOOKS1Today the books are falling apart and the library is in danger of disintegrating. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no money to care for libraries and this collection is crumbling.

The State Historical Library is behind the restoration project because it is not in a position to restore or repair the books,  provide security, or control temperature or humidity to preserve these rare books and historic manuscripts.

The TMCF needs $2 million dollars to begin its work and is currently active in fundraising for the following goals of the restoration project:

Start the immediate restoration of severely damaged books;

Implement the restoration work by creating additional work space and purchase of  equipment;

Computerize, monitor and ensure safety of
the 50,000 volume collection;

Cover administrative expenses such as:

exhibition of restored books

special publications of restored books

seminars/workshops for restorers and librarians of major Russian libraries

salaried personnel

fundraising and public relations

scientific research and development
